This year saw Palmview readers 'blast off' with the addition of a rocket reading area in the library. This foam rocket with cushions, has been a popular addition, for all ages, and allows the children to sit quietly and read by themselves, or in groups of three. It is never empty!
The library is a busy hub at lunchtime with students coming to play a multitude of board and card games, do library-provided activities, read quietly or borrow and return. We have sectioned the library into cosy reading corners, working areas, group circles and break-out rooms. We also utilise our undercover, outdoor area so our students have a range of activities and places to feel comfortable.
Our collection is growing, and we now boast fiction, non-fiction, picture books, beginner reader books, graphic novels and magazines for our students to borrow. And they are borrowing! It is wonderful to see the excitement on their faces when they discover new books, series or genres that they enjoy. We are planning to give students in years 3-6 the opportunity to learn to negotiate the OPAC [our online library catalogue] which will aid in their understanding of genres, subjects and classifications, as well as help them to easily find books they would like to read.
We have many fun activities and competitions, based on different genres, planned for the library this year. Our aim is always to promote literacy. If your child is a reluctant reader, please encourage them to ask Tracey for help in choosing a book or genre – together we will find the book that sparks their enjoyment. Happy reading!
